Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION:

  • To provide specialized services to patients for the diagnosis and management of diseases of the digestive tract.

SCOPE: 

  • The gastroenterologist is a staff member of the Internal Medicine Service Division of the Specialty Medical Services Department.
  • Responsibilities are divided between the outpatient G.I. Clinic and Endoscopy Unit (40% of his time), and the in-patient services: Consultations and admissions 25% of his time, and G.I. procedures (upper G.I. and lower G.I. endoscopies, E.R.C.P., etc) 20%, and general internal medicine duties 15% of his time. He works under the professional supervision of the Chief of Internal Medicine service.

 
PRINCIPAL CONTACTS: 

  • Contact with patients, their families, nurses, endoscopy staff (nurses and technicians), other gastroenterologists, internists, ward physicians, and physicians of the Specialty Services and Ambulatory Services Departments.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: 

  • To perform the professional duties of a gastroenterologist in accordance with the delineation of privileges as recommended by the Chief of Internal Medicine Service and approved by the Credentials Committee.
  • To perform his duties in the G.I: Clinic, evaluating patients with G.I. diseases which accounts for 25% of his time.
  • To provide care to his patients in the intensive care units and medical wards, which accounts for 25% of his time.
  • To perform G.I. procedures - upper and lower G.I. endoscopies, liver biopsies, E.R.C.P., and oesophageal motility studies - 20% of his time.
  • To provide consultation services to the in-patient services in his area of expertise which accounts for 15% of his time.
  • To share in the on-call duties of the Internal Medicine Service, which accounts for 15% of his time. The gastroenterologist is an internist as well as a gastroenterologist and is expected to perform all the duties performed by an internist (refer to duties of internist).
  •  Provides after-working-hours on-call emergency coverage for G.I. emergencies.Provides supervision and education to the endoscopy staff, nurses, and technicians.
  • Participates in the monthly staff meeting of the Internal Medicine Service.
  • Attends and contributes to the daily morning Chief's conference to review admissions and management problems.
  • Participates and contributes to the educational activities in the service: daily noon conferences, weekly grand rounds, monthly journal club, and the general physicians' twice monthly conferences.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Chief of service (e.g. Committee membership). 
  • Participates and contributes to all the quality assurance activities of the service (e.g. monthly mortality and morbidity conference, peer review, audit, and chart review).
  • Supervises the work of ward physicians, professional development physicians, and interns, and provides his evaluation of their work at the request of the Chief of Service.
  • Performs duties in general internal medicine clinics/wards as assigned by the Chief of Service and as workload dictates.

Job Skills

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Graduation from an approved medical school MD. 
  • One year of internship.
  • Two years of residency training in internal medicine in a recognized residency training program.
  • American Board of Internal Medicine certification or equivalent (eg.. MRCP).
  • Two years of fellowship training in G.I. in a recognized training program.
  • American Board of Medicine - sub-specialty of G.I. certificate or eligible.
  • In the UK system at least two years of registrar jobs in gastroenterology following his qualification in internal medicine.
  • Must hold a valid license to practice medicine.
  • Two years of practice in the field of G.I. and proof of expertise in the discipline of G.I.
  • Excellent command of verbal and written English. Ability to adjust to group practice in an industrial environment.
