Job Description

• To provide specialized services to patients for the diagnosis and management of diseases of the digestive tract.
• The gastroenterologist is a staff member of the Internal Medicine Service Division of the Specialty Medical Services Department.
• To perform the professional duties of a gastroenterologist by the delineation of privileges as recommended by the Chief of Internal Medicine Service and approved by the Credentials Committee.
• To perform his duties in the G.I Clinic, evaluating patients with G.I. diseases which accounts for 25% of his/her time.
• To provide care to his patients in the intensive care units and medical wards, which accounts for 25% of his/her time.
• To perform G.I. procedures - upper and lower G.I. endoscopies, liver biopsies, E.R.C.P., and oesophageal motility studies - 20% of his/her time.
• To provide consultation services to the in-patient services in his area of expertise which accounts for 15% of his/her time.
• To share in the on-call duties of the Internal Medicine Service, which accounts for 15% of his/her time. The gastroenterologist position vacancy is an internist as well as a gastroenterologist and is expected to perform all the duties performed by an internist as well.
• Provides after-working-hours on-call emergency coverage for G.I. emergencies.
• Provides supervision and education to the endoscopy staff, nurses, and technicians.
• Participates in the monthly staff meeting of the Internal Medicine Service.
• Attends and contributes to the daily morning Chief's conference to review admissions and management problems .
• Participates and contributes to the educational activities in the service: daily noon conferences, weekly grand rounds, monthly journal club, and the general physicians' twice monthly conferences.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by the Chief of service (e.g. Committee membership).
• Participates and contributes to all the quality assurance activities of the service (e.g. monthly mortality and morbidity conference, peer review, audit, and chart review).
• Supervises the work of ward physicians, professional development physicians, and interns, and provides his evaluation of their work at the request of the Chief of Service.
• Performs duties in general internal medicine clinics/wards as assigned by the Chief of Service and as workload dictates.
