Job Description

  • Develop, maintain, and lead a learning culture amongst the nursing team.
  • Establish, monitor, and ensure professional standards of care are maintained within the Nursing Department.
  • Be a member of the Hospital Management Executive Committee and participate with the leaders of the governing body, management, and medical staff in the development of hospital plans, programs, and policies.
  • Be responsible for written policies and procedures that guide, support, and assist nursing personnel in the performance of their duties. These policies should be updated at least every two years.
  • Work with HR’s Performance Improvement Management Plan based on the Hospital Improvement Plan, including but not limited to performance improvement, utilization review, and risk management.
  • Be responsible for the overall administration of the Nursing Departments and maintain the quality of nursing care in collaboration with the Medical Director and Department Heads.
  • Ensure that programs and standards for the ongoing education of nurses are established periodically.
  • Ensure the Nursing Department is informed of hospital policies, regulations, and accreditation standards that impact the quality of patient care.
  • Investigate and take appropriate action on matters of concern, reporting findings and subsequent recommendations to the Chairman/Deputy Chairman and other relevant Department Heads.
  • Ensure that any sentinel or serious incident related to nursing practice triggers a Nursing Process Review, with timely actions to ensure safe practice, learning from mistakes, and implementing necessary changes.
  • Establish and ensure that written Standing Orders and Regulations for the Nursing Department are implemented and reviewed regularly.
  • Facilitate communication between nurses and other members of the healthcare disciplines.
  • Chair or delegate authority to a designated representative for Nursing Department meetings.
  • Ensure that representatives of the nursing staff are appointed to appropriate hospital committees.
  • Serve on administrative and other hospital committees as requested.
  • Assist in determining departmental priorities and the related allocation of resources based on departmental needs.
  • Develop staffing requirements and participate in recruitment planning and resource allocation in coordination with management.
  • Participate in facility planning affecting the Nursing Department.
  • Undertake annual staff appraisals, focus on performance, and consider individual training needs in collaboration with the Personnel/Human Resources Department.
  • Promote the core values of the hospital and ensure implementation of the department’s philosophy.
  • Foster a climate of professional challenge and growth for all members of the Nursing Department.
  • Be familiar with and lead emergency and evacuation procedures.
  • Advocate for nursing to the hospital leadership and governing group.
  • Develop strategic, operational, and fiscal goals in collaboration with inpatient medical and allied health leadership.
  • Ensure that realistic and cost-effective operational and capital budgets are developed and implemented.
  • Oversee departmental operating expenses and plan capital equipment purchases.
  • Establish and meet budgetary targets and maximize ancillary revenue capture for services provided to patients

Job Skills

  • Hold an appropriate Registered Nurse license to practice under the relevant regulatory health authority, with all mandated qualifications and experience.
  • Hold a Master’s degree in Nursing or Hospital Administration/Management.
  • Hold a valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider card.
  • Demonstrate the ability to influence, implement, and execute change when necessary.
